This month at Maple Hall, we’ll host an interesting visitor, young UT scholar Olivia Roberts, who will be talking about the little-known asylum cemetery, where rest hundreds of patients of “Eastern State” mental hospital, now the location of Lakeshore Park. Roberts regards her project as a “memorialization” to remember these people buried near where they spent their later years, some of them forgotten by their own families. We’ll also include some discussion of Eastern State, once known as “Lyons View Asylum,” founded in the 1880s as Tennessee’s second public mental hospital, with an almost self-sustaining farming campus that was at the time bigger than UT’s.
Free program. Food and drinks available for purchase.
