Paul James with the Knoxville History Project has been taking on a titanic labor of love, trying to nail down details of the greatest concerts in Knoxville since the 1950s, collecting concert photos, posters, and personal memories of shows ranging from Louis Armstrong, who played to a segregated show interrupted by a bomb blast at Chilhowee Park in 1957, to U2, who opened for J. Geils Band at UT Alumni Hall, and R.E.M, who played in bars on the Strip, both in the 80’s. And how about Prince’s now legendary show at the Civic Coliseum in 1983? He’s still in the early stages of what will be an ongoing project, launching soon as the Knoxville Music Archive and Oral History Project, but will share a selection of notable shows that he’s found so far, and the local venues, many now lost to history, that have served Knoxville concert-goers over the years.
