Join Jack Neely for the continuation of the fascinating story of Eugenia Williams, her mansion, and her immediate surroundings. Our narrative of this familiar street, though hardly a mile and a half long, has a rich and surprising history, and is guaranteed to surprise. It’s the setting of Knoxville’s first enduring work of fine art, it’s been the home for well over a century of an African American community, it’s the address of East Tennessee’s first mental hospital, and of Knoxville’s first 18-hole golf course. Poet Wallace Stevens described it in detail, Tennessee Williams alluded to it in a play, and Duke Ellington performed here—and a particularly influential four-star Air Force general grew up here.
