Jack, as a local Uber driver and somewhat recent resident of Knoxville (November of 2020), I read this entire story and almost cried. When I first moved here from Atlanta, I wasn’t very impressed with the downtown area of Knoxville. I would have described it as “dead.” The push to create some tourism district out of downtown Knoxville has priced out much of the local businesses, besides those that thrive on temporary residents; your ice cream shops, theatres, and bars, for example. I had always wondered what the Medical Arts building was originally designed for. The era that you have lived through in the city is one I have never experienced, but I am grateful for your tour through it from your own lived experience. I’d love to go for a walk around downtown with you sometime, just to hear your stories about how things have changed over the years.
