Linda Lee loaned us some of her personal photos through our Shoebox Shares appeal, and perhaps the most startling is this undated shot of internationally popular crooner Perry Como with an unidentified woman at now-defunct Deane Hill Country Club. Como came several times in the 1970s to compete in the Chet Atkins Celebrity Invitational Tournament, always held in early June.
The 1979 Tournament that particular year & locale – as night fell & wrapping up… a once in a lifetime event occurred. On the Country Club’s main dining room stage… an impromptu celebrity band formed & took the stage…
(perhaps they were the 2 million dollar band) On stage these Golf Tournament Celebrity attendees performed together unrehearsed… but their consummate/ premier musicianship was on display for those lucky enough to witness it… The band members were as follows:
Perry Como – vocals , Boots Randolph – Sax, Jerry Reed – guitar & vocals, Chet Atkins – guitar, Dale Roberson – drums, Floyd Cramer – keyboards… and sadly it wasn’t captured on film in its entirety…but that’s the Gospel truth!!!
