Launched in 2017 by the Knoxville History Project, the goal of Downtown Art Wraps is to inspire an appreciation of the city’s rich artistic heritage by highlighting renowned works of art from local museums and collections and placing them blank traffic signal boxes on the city’s streets. KHP has now “wrapped” 40 traffic boxes and it’s time to replace the original ones.
Our goal is to raise $5,000 to install three new art wraps, featuring artwork by Catherine Wiley (at Gay and Union), Lloyd Branson (at Gay and W. Church), and Kermit C. “Buck” Ewing (at Clinch and Locust), by the spring of 2025.
Downtown signal boxes are “wrapped” with a high quality, graffiti-resistant, removable application to serve as a canvass to showcase artworks by some of the most important Knoxville or East Tennessee artists from the past. All art wraps feature illustrated biographies of the artists, highlighting their connections to Knoxville. Art wraps lasts for about five years before they need to be replaced.
To celebrate National Giving Day, make a donation to help us continue this, our most visible, public art and history series.
