McGhee Tyson Airport is named after Brig. Gen. Lawrence Davis Tyson's son, who was killed during World War I when his plane cashed off the North Sea while on a U-boat spotting mission. McGhee's parents donated land that became Tyson Park in exchange for the naming rights to what was going to be called Great Smoky Mountains Airport. Was TYS ever considered or named as an International airport? I believe in the early days I remember it referenced that way because 747’s can land there.
