This month, we’re looking at Knoxville’s most famous neighborhood, Fort Sanders, which is the subject of our upcoming online walking tour. One of Knoxville’s most creative and storied neighborhoods, Fort Sanders became famous for a bloody 20-minute battle in 1863, but is now more often in the news for a decades-long battle to preserve its heritage from educational, medical, and commercial encroachments. Believe it or not, there’s still some valuable and visible history there, regarding its remarkable role as a breeder of literary, musical, and artistic talent. Offering vivid insights we never had before is the newly published memoir, Of Time and Knoxville, by Anne Armstrong—who called Fort Sanders home long before James Agee did. We’ll touch on all that, with slides.
