ETHS Exhibit Reproduction of a Holston Base Ball Club Uniform.
Curator of the Museum of East Tennessee History’s lively and fascinating exhibit on the history of baseball, Adam has more experience with historic ball than most library researchers, as one of the participating founders of our local Vintage Base Ball league. Base ball, as practiced (and spelled) in the 1860s, was something of an extreme sport, in those days when gloves were for sissies. He’ll open our conversation, with a slide show about what he’s learned—all on a site that could be called the birthplace of the sport in East Tennessee. As we figure it, Maple Hall’s bowling alley is lined up along the third-base line of Knoxville’s first-ever baseball diamond, in the post-Civil War days when the whole town turned out to sit on the embankment below Gay Street and behold America’s then-new pastime.
