Harry P. Ijams (1876-1954), a talented commercial artist and a renowned naturalist, purchased 24 acres on the south bank of the Tennessee River in South Knoxville in 1910. The Ijams farm became part of a 1,000 acre bird preserve in the 1920s and later became a city park and now forms the core of Ijams nature Center. (Ijams family collection.)
